How To Keep Your Curls Overnight

How To Keep Your Curls Overnight

Whether you’re blessed with a natural head of beautiful curls, or you owe those luscious locks to your trusted curling wand, trying to protect curls overnight has become one of our greatest beauty struggles.

We’ve all experienced going to bed with a perfect head of curls, only to wake up to a flattened mess. It’s frustrating, right? Well, don’t worry. We understand the struggle (trust us. We do) and that’s why we’re bringing you the ultimate guide on how you can protect curls overnight:

How to Keep Your Curls Overnight Using Silk Pillowcases

When thinking about how to protect curls overnight, silk pillowcases are your go-to! They can do wonders for your hair by keeping it hydrated whilst minimizing frizz and breakage. Using cotton pillowcases, although can feel super soft against your face, can dry out your hair… which is a guaranteed way to wake up without your gorgeous curls!

Don’t have a silk pillowcase? Don’t worry! As an alternative, you can try a hair bonnet or a nightcap! We recommend you use our ‘Curl Bonnet’ to protect curls overnight. Our night bonnet is specifically designed to work as the necessary buffer between your curls and your cotton pillowcase. All you need to do is tuck your curls under the bonnet before bed and shazam… get ready to wake up with curls full of life!

How To Keep Your Curls Overnight With Plopping

A technique we love over here is plopping. Never heard of it? Let us explain.

Have you ever wondered why your curls sometimes look better and more defined when they’re wet, but frizzy when dry? Well, this is likely due to your hair losing crucial moisture during the drying stages. To avoid this, it’s important to treat your curls in between washes to retain some of that killer definition. And that’s exactly what curl plopping is.

Curl plopping has soared in popularity in recent times due to its convenience and has quickly become a regular practice for us curly-haired beauties. How does it work?

Step 1

The first step to protect curls overnight is to remove any excess water from your hair by hand. You can do this with a t-shirt or a microfiber towel.

Step 2

Once hair has been slightly dried you want to grab your favorite styling product. We recommend a leave-in conditioner, such as our 5-star rated ‘Leave In Condish’. You can also use a styling lotion if you prefer. We recommend our ‘Pillow Soft Curls’. Apply either one generously to the hair.

Step 3

Lay a t-shirt on a soft flat surface with the sleeves at the end closest to you. You can also use a lightweight microfibre towel if you prefer.

Step 4

Flip your head over the shirt, or towel, with your hair lined up in the center. Pick up the sleeves (or corners) and cross them over your neck. Then, pick up the flap of fabric that is furthest away from you and fold it over the base of your neck. Wrap the remaining fabric around your head and tie it at the front. Leave your hair wrapped for 10-20 minutes before diffusing.

Step 5

After 10-20 minutes, remove the t-shirt or towel. Grab a diffuser of your choice (we recommend our bestselling ‘Pik Defrizz Diffuser’ as it provides the perfect blast of concentrated heat, helping you eliminate frizz and enhance your curls).
Attach your diffuser to the nozzle of your blow-dryer. Begin cupping medium-sized sections of your curls and aim the diffuser at each section until the curls are dry… and there you have it. It’s that simple!

How to Protect Curls Overnight with The Pineapple

No, we’re not talking about the fruit, as delicious as it is. The Pineapple is a hair technique specifically used to protect curly hair when you sleep.

The pineapple is a loose, high ponytail on the top of your head that prevents frizz, knots, and flat curls. By doing this, only the backs and sides of your hair will touch the pillowcase and become subject to your tossing and turning.

We recommend using a scrunchie as you only want to wrap it around your hair once (if possible), as we want to avoid creasing or denting the hair. If you don’t have a scrunchie you can alternatively wrap our ‘Curl Bonnet’ around the pineapple for extra protection.

How to Protect Curls When Sleeping with Hair Oil

Our final top tip we have to protect curls overnight is to keep your hair moisturized. Naturally, curly hair typically holds a lot less moisture than straight hair. This is because oils from the scalp flow down straight hair, whereas, with curly hair, this process is made a little more difficult. The lack of hydration from these all-important natural oils can lead to dry and frizzy hair, especially when sleeping.

When looking at how to protect curls overnight, it’s super important to apply a quality hair oil when your hair is wet. We recommend our ‘Grow Strong Mafura Natural Hair Growth Oil’. Not only will this set your hair up for great success when it comes to retaining those gorgeous curls, but it will also hydrate your scalp, encouraging hair growth and even reducing split ends.

Giving your locks a helping hand in retaining some extra moisture will keep your curls looking tight and fresh, even throughout the night.
